How AI podcast tools can speed up your podcast production process

It’s no secret that podcast production is time consuming and can be a little bit tedious. People start podcasts for a lot of reasons but many don’t have the capacity to spend hours on production each week.

The following is a list of the average weekly tasks needed to produce a podcast:

  • Research potential guests
  • Send out pitch emails
  • Brainstorming ideas for episodes
  • Plan episodes
  • Record episode
  • Edit episode
  • Write show notes
  • Write transcript
  • Create social media content
  • Social media promotion
  • Upload episode and schedule for release

And the following is a list of ways AI podcast tools can help you:

  • Use Chat GPT to brainstorm and plan episodes
  • Use Riverside to record your episodes
  • Use Descript to edit your episodes
  • Use Swell AI to write your show notes
  • Use Descript, Swell AI, Riverside or Assembly AI to write your transcript

The best tools to start a podcast

If you’re just starting your podcast and you want to start with just one tool I would say Riverside is your best bet. You can record your interviews in Riverside, edit right on the website, write transcripts and create social media clips.

You can combine this with the free AI tool Chat GPT to help write your SEO-friendly show notes, scripts and promos.

The amazing AI podcast tools

Riverside.fm

Riverside is an all-in-one podcasting platform that provides everything you need to record, edit and produce your podcast. The platform includes a built-in recording studio, basic audio and video editing tools, episode transcripts and the ability to search and edit using the transcript.

I recommend my clients use Riverside to record their episodes if they have guests on the podcast. The recording studios are easy to use and share with guests. As the host you can monitor audio levels, invite more people, and stop and start the recording. Episodes are recorded locally meaning if you or your guests’ internet drops or gets a bit patchy the recording won’t be affected. It also records in individual tracks meaning you have more freedom in editing out one sided issues.

Once recorded you can either download the recordings and edit on your editor of choice or you can edit right in Riverside. You can do this for both audio and video. This is where the AI comes in. Riverside uses AI to transcribe your episode and you can edit the text to remove parts of the episode. The feature isn’t perfect just yet but I’d imagine it will improve with time.

Riverside has some audio optimisation features built into the editing which is decent but isn’t the same as doing it manually in something like Audacity or Audition.

You could also use the editing feature to make short social media clips. Riverside allows you to select the video size suitable to your social media of choice and then you can use the transcript to find the snippet you want and export it.

I think Riverside is a really good tool which does a lot. A lot of people just use Riverside to record but make sure and take advantage of the other features too.

Riverside has a free plan with up to two hours recording per month included and then paid plans start at $15 US per month.

Chat GPT

We probably all know OpenAI’s most famous platform by now but did you know it can help you with your podcasting workflow?

One of the best things about ChatGPT is that it can help you come up with ideas for your podcast. It can give you suggestions for topics that will interest your listeners. It can even help you write scripts for your show, so you can make sure you’re engaging and entertaining your target audience.

ChatGPT can also help you with your podcast show notes. You can either jot down bullet points while you edit, or get the transcription and ask Chat GPT to create show notes. You can describe your writing style and specific instructions.

Be aware that ChatGPT has a question character limit so you will likely have to input your transcript in in multiple parts.

You can also use ChatGPT to help create your social media strategy or to write posts.

It’s a super helpful tool that can save you time and effort, and help you create a podcast that your audience will keep coming back to. And the best part is the free plan is that I have found the free plan more than sufficient.

Swell AI

Swell AI is an AI writing service that uses machine learning technology to:

  • Transcribe podcasts episodes
  • Transform podcasts and videos into written articles
  • Suggest titles
  • Write show notes

It has ChatGPT integrated into the site so you can ask ChatGPT to do anything else you might need without having to worry about the character limit. I like to use it to write show notes in a different format to the ones provided.

They have also just introduced a really exciting new feature called Swell Ask. It is a question box similar to ChatGPT but you can embed it on your own website. Your audience can use it to ask questions about the podcast.

Swell AI has a free plan with 1 upload per month included or they have paid plans starting at $29 per month for five uploads.

Descript

Descript can help you record, transcribe, edit and create social media snippets from your podcast.

I found the transcription to be relatively accurate and a new feature will go run through your transcription and detect transcription errors.

The editing is done by editing the transcript and the audio is automatically amended. This is a very convenient way to edit, especially if you have a podcast with a lot of mistakes. It can also remove all filler words such as “umm”s and “aahh”s.

I think Descript works best as an editing software if you either have really good quality audio or you’re going to optimise the audio afterwards in an audio editing software like Audacity.

Descript has a free trial allowing you to process up to three hours of content but once this is used up you have to pay to use Descript. Prices start at $15 per month.

Where Descript can help:

  • Record episode
  • Edit episode
  • Write show notes
  • Write transcript
  • Create social media content

AssemblyAI

AssemblyAI is another AI-powered transcription tool that can help you create accurate transcripts of your podcast episodes quickly. The platform uses machine learning algorithms to transcribe audio recordings with impressive accuracy.

It can also write summaries, detect topics, filter bad language and detect people, company names and places mentioned in the audio. You could use this in creating your podcast social media content.

AssemblyAI isn’t specifically designed for podcasting so you may not use a lot of its features in your podcast workflow but the transcription service is excellent and completely free to use.
